Seven Interior Design ideas to create a backyard oasis in a small patio space in time for Summer entertaining

When our longtime client’s daughter purchased her first home in Vista, California they called on us to turn the small, dirt-filled backyard into a Summertime haven. The builders left us with a pile of dirt and a fence line that would not be suitable for any privacy or a way to plan the design. So, with a little work with the foreman, we had the dirt leveled and the fence line brought up to a reasonable height. That gave us the foundation we needed to create a level space.

We chose a large format tile from Bonsall Design Studio for the entire backyard space. Doing this created a seamless look and gives the impression of a larger space. Playing of the home’s neutral palette, we selected a warm slate to compliment and keep the eye focused on the elements

Our clients wanted to have a place they could relax by the fireplace, BBQ food and also a table to accommodate 8. This was the most challenging part since we were limited on space. We customized a high top bar/counter and added cantilever wheels so they could move the counter should they want to accommodate more people. I’m in LOVE with how this turned out.

For those of you who live in San Diego, you know that our late Summer sun can be very strong. We wanted to provide shade while still allowing light filtration into the feature space of this backyard. Our contracting team nailed it with this simple pergola structure (attached to the house). The stain we used was natural to enhance the natural color of the wood and keep the pergola updated and modern The canopy we used is a light filtering poly that comes in sheets, but you can also use wood slats or bamboo. Keep in mind bamboo does not withstand the winter elements and you may need to replace annually.

Our top seven recommendations to give a small backyard a Summertime refresh:

  1. Start at the bottom: Try to give your floor a one type of material look. We chose tile for this project, but you can use grass/turf, concrete pour or a sustainable wood.

  2. Identify the party elements: What are your priorities? BBQ, Dining, Games, Lounging? Pick your top 3-5 and focus on those. By selecting only a few your space will feel cohesive and clean yet still fun!

  3. Color Palette: I’ve said this SOOO many times but pick your palette and stay within those lines. Trust me, it will be easier to plan the rest of your space when you do this. It makes all those selections out there a little less daunting.

  4. Lighting: Do your best to add lighting. Whether you are hanging string lights or installing sconces and overhead lighting, this part is key. It will give you the vibe you and your family and friends are looking for while enjoying the backyard.

  5. Shade: Use sun shades, umbrellas and pergolas to provide ample shade. You will use your space more when it is protected from the elements. It also can make it easier to maintain.

  6. Greenery: You don’t have to have a green thumb to have plants. Try native plants in your area and for those in drier regions go for cactus and low-maintenance plants to keep things easy.

  7. Budget friendly items: Choose where you want to go all out and do it. When it comes to furnishings and decor, be selective about how you spend (outdoor fabrics/cushions) and bring in less expensive options like side tables and pillows where you can.
