A (quarantine) bathroom make over on a budget

Hey guys!

It’s finally here. We are ready to share our at home bathroom make over. My husband and I decided to finally tackle our daughter’s bathroom redesign during quarantine. When it all began, the plan was for him to demo and prep and for me to try my hand at tiling. I know, kinda gutsy. But, hey we had nothing but time. During the demo we discovered our walls were not even and that all Hardie backer is not created equally. Hmm, how was I a first time tiler going to pull this off?

To further discourage me from jumping in and using my brand new wet tile saw, my client donated some left over Cle Tile (thank you @truework.environment!) to us. If you guys aren’t familiar with this product, I’ll just say that it is some of the prettiest on the market. And very natural looking with its nooks and crannies, similar to that of an english muffin. All these organic markings mean that one must expertly install. Okay, skip to hiring a tile installer. There goes some of the budget lol. It also involved lots of trips out to my parents house in an effort to keep our household healthy and free from potential covid-related issues.

Once the tile was installed and we were back at home it was time to take the Ikea vanity (donated to us by my husband’s company), from dark brown to a brilliant white. Thanks to Bob Vila’s article on how to paint Ikea furniture, I’d say it turned out beautiful. And this one I did accomplish with a little help from my mom, so at least there was some DIY on my part :)

The next step was prepping all the walls for paint. We created an archway where there was once a door going into the shower. The door made it difficult to maneuver in such a small space so removing it was key to the overall design. We also demoed the traditional medicine cabinet and left an arched nook its place to match it’s sister arch. For photos of the arched spaces, scroll down.

For the finishing touches, we ordered round knobs from an Etsy supplier who shipped them super quickly and was a pleasure to work with. To keep the walls simple but bring in some black we downloaded digital artwork of a San Diego beach scene and used a frame we already had at home. The rug is from Urban Outfitters who does a great job holding inventory and shipping quickly. Most of the remaining items came from Target and scents from PF Candle Co. I’m personally obsessed with their Sandlewood Rose diffusers.

The perfect compliment to our grey/blue and dusty pink palette.

With a little patience and creativity we were finally able to tackle this bathroom in our home. There were moments of victory and even more moments of defeat but in the end, we did it. And it looks beautiful. The transformation from dark to light makes us smile every time we walk in the room.
